Sep 27 2018—Prestigious Award Recognizes Lasting Contributions to the 3D Technology Industry
Professor Emanuel “Ely” Sachs, a pioneer of 3D printing, the inventor of binder jet printing, and a co-founder of Desktop Metal, a company committed to accelerating the transformation of manufacturing with end-to-end metal 3D printing solutions, has been inducted into TCT Group’s Hall of Fame, as announced during the annual TCT awards in Birmingham, UK last night.
The Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have made a significant impact in either inventing or developing 3D printing technologies since their inception more than 30 years ago. James Woodcock, VP Content Strategy & Partnershipsat TCT Group, explains: “The TCT Hall of Fame was established to recognize those individuals who have made a lasting beneficial contribution to the 3D technologies industry. We are delighted to have Prof. Emanuel ‘Ely’ Sachs, who is the man who coined the very term ‘3D Printing’ for which an entire industry is shaped, as one of our 2018 inductees.”
Sachs first established the term “3D printing” in the late 1980s while inventing and developing binder jet technology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Since that time, binder jetting has proven to be one of the critical innovations in the additive manufacturing world and is taking its place as a crucial building block - a technology ideally suited to the movement toward manufacturing by 3D printing.
“I am honored and humbled to be chosen among this year’s cohort of prestigious nominees inducted into the TCT Hall of Fame, alongside my esteemed colleagues, Dr. Carl Deckard and Greg Morris,” said Sachs. “My father, a publisher, inspired in me a love of printing, making my choice of the term 3D printing in the 1980s quite natural. I am delighted to see and participate in new innovations that build on the base that we established.”
As co-founder at Desktop Metal, Sachs’ leadership has been instrumental in the development of Single Pass JettingTM, the proprietary technology utilized by the Production System. Additionally, Sachs continues to educate the next generation of engineers through his position as a professor of mechanical engineering at MIT where he earned his SM, MS and PhD in Mechanical Engineering.
For the 2018 TCT Hall of Fame, six nominees were first selected based on input from the Expert Advisory Board, a panel of independent experts, analysts, journalists, and academics across the globe. Once compiled, the nominees were submitted to TCT Magazine readers and the global 3D printing community, who then voted for the three individuals they believed to have made the most significant impact toward either inventing or developing the key technologies that have driven the additive manufacturing industry.
